BRINGING BLOGS BACK
As an older member of Gen Z, I was an early adopter and consumer of YouTube, Tumblr, Instagram, and now Tiktok. What they all have in common is that, for me, they brought comfort in times that might have otherwise felt lonely. However, the platforms naturally evolved, and my friends and I sometimes discuss the dread that comes now with logging in and doing the doom scroll of beautiful people living perfectly curated lives — or worse the onslaught of engagement and pregnancy announcements from past classmates. Recently, being in another career lull in a new city, another breakup, and a general identity crisis, I was feeling more at a loss than ever. Luckily, I decided to start watching the iconic show: Sex and the City.
Carrie Bradshaw’s strong female friendships, devotion to fashion, and honest pursuit of love felt like everything I needed at that moment. Her eagerness for the city and what life had to offer, despite making stupid mistakes and possibly irresponsible shopping decisions, made me feel kinship with this character. However, I can’t hail a cab and pick up the latest New York Star partly because it is fictional, I live on the opposite coast, and nobody buys newspapers anymore. I was left thinking, if Carrie Bradshaw were here now, what would she do? What format could maintain her voice and be read by women everywhere? Blogging was my answer. Yes, blogs are nearly as old-fashioned-chic as record players and film cameras are, but there is something to the simplicity of the format that is a breath of fresh air compared to the shorter, flashier forms of media that are more popular today .I think we can learn from Carrie’s honest introspection and humor amidst the chaos in an oversaturated and polished online world.
With this blog I am hoping to bring the only perspective I am truly qualified to write about…mine. Maybe so I don’t look back and say coulda, woulda, shoulda for myself in my own navigation of my 20’s, but also I hope to connect with others who like thinking about “Big” things.
